Shagbark hickory (Carya ovata) is probably the most distinctive of all the hickories because of its loose-plated bark. Shagbark hickory is evenly distributed throughout the Eastern States and, together with pignut hickory, furnishes the bulk of the commercial hickory.
Shagbark Hickory is lighter than Shellbark and Pignut, but its strength values are less as well. It makes for a good "introduction" to the feel of true hickory bats.
Shagbark Hickory is still much stronger and harder than Ash, Birch, and Maple.
